McLaren using Renault and Mercedes engines in 2021

It may sound strange, but McLaren could be on the track in 2021 with both Renault and Mercedes engines.

This is made possible by the possible extension of the season into 2021: If Formula 1 continues to run the current season beyond December 2020 in January 2021, McLaren would still have to drive the current car with its current engine partner.

McLaren team boss Andreas Seidl says: “As far as the legal situation is concerned, when contracts expire at the end of 2020, we are all in the same boat here. I can’t imagine that extending the existing contracts into January 2021 would be a huge problem. We have an agreement with Renault for 2020 that expires at the end of the year. But I don’t think that would be an obstacle to driving a 2020 McLaren-Renault in January 2021 in a Grand Prix.”

Since Formula 1 will also be running with the cars of the current season in 2021, McLaren was nevertheless allowed by the FIA to convert his car for the Mercedes engine, which the English team will use again from 2021.
