Is Toto Wolff leaving Mercedes?

03/29/2020 Formula 1 News

What lies behind the current rumours around Toto Wolff and what Lawrence Stroll and Aston Martin have to do with it.

It was an article from motorsport-total.com that stirred up the sports media. Unfortunately, many colleagues did not take the findings of the article very seriously and caused some confusion.

To the facts: Lawrence Stroll, together with a group of financial investors, bought a large proportion of Aston Martin shares a few weeks ago. motorsport-total.com has now researched that Toto Wolff, together with another group of investors, has made a similar offer to acquire a stake in Aston Martin as well. Wolff is also to become CEO of Aston Martin.

Around the Australian Grand Prix, Toto Wolff is said to have been thwarted twice by the Chairman of Daimler AG. Daimler CEO Ola Källenius is said to have agreed with Ferrari president John Elkann that Mercedes will stay out of #Ferrarigate and will leave the protest group of all non-Ferrari teams against the FIA-Ferrari deal – originally initiated by Wolff. The second interference concerned Mercedes’ participation in the Australian Grand Prix. It is said that Wolff – together with the two Red Bull Teams and Racing Point – wanted the race to take place, then a call came from Ola Källenius, who ordered Wolff back.

When asked by motorsport-total.com, Toto Wolff then only cleared up one half of the story and replied: “The story is not true. I’m not going to be the CEO of Aston Martin.” – What is more interesting is what Wolff is not saying: He neither denies his planned entry as an investor in Aston Martin, nor does he deny the interference of Ola Källenius.

motorsport-total.com editor-in-chief Christian Nimmervoll even goes so far in his current assessment of the situation that he expresses the feeling that Toto Wolff will no longer be team boss when the 2020 Formula 1 season starts.

It would be conceivable: Mercedes has not yet signed a new contract with Liberty Media for participation in the Formula 1 World Championship after 2020 and Wolff’s contract as Mercedes F1 Team Principal ends in 2020.
