Mercedes with engine modifications before Melbourne

After some engine problems at the Barcelona tests, there are now improvements before the first race.

Both the Mercedes factory team and the customer team Williams Racing were plagued by engine problems with this year’s Mercedes engines in Barcelona.

After intensive investigations at the local engine factory in Brixworth, problems with the cooling of the generator for energy recovery in the turbocharger area (Motor Generation Unit – Heat or MGU-H for short) were solved and did not occur during the second week of testing.

The other problems on the engine were due to “bearing damage”, which was not more precisely defined but was probably fixed.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff: ” We’re glad that we encountered these issues in testing rather than at a race weekend as we could work on fixing them without any penalties.”
